Repeatedly, we see events unfold where a devout Christian or Muslim merely states teachings of the holy scriptures that define their religion, then liberals react with anger and disgust, appearing to possess absolutely no knowledge about what the holy text in question says (For example, the widespread condemnation of Phil Robertson’s anti-gay tirade which was simply him enthusiastically reciting Romans 1). These liberals go on to viciously condemn the Christian’s statements as morally despicable while claiming that their own selves respect and love all religions.
It has happened again.
A Christian named Russell Vought was nominated for deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget. At a hearing on the matter of this nomination, Senator Bernie Sanders mentioned a short statement Vought had made about a year ago regarding Muslims in relation to the Christian faith. (You can watch the exchange here)
Vought’s statement in question was this:
“Muslims do not simply have a deficient theology. They do not know God because they have rejected Jesus Christ his Son, and they stand condemned.”
Sanders accused Vought’s statement of being “islamophobic”, “hateful, and “discriminatory”. He also asked Vought whether all American Muslims are ‘condemned’, and added “What about Jews? Do they stand condemned too?”
Liberals all over the internet applauded Sanders for this denunciation.
Now the point of this article is not whether Russell Vought should actually be appointed, or to even say that Sanders’ comments were unjustified in and of themselves.
Rather, the point I want to make is about the obscene irrationality and ignorance of the countless liberals who act so shocked and get up in arms about such statements from religious believers.
Every time such incidents occur, liberals insist upon attacking the issue as just the problematic statements of a single bigoted individual or group that they claim is distorting the real religion – ironically, a religion they know essentially nothing about.
What so many liberals fail to understand here is that Vought’s statements are completely in line with the doctrines expressed in the New Testament. He merely stated the most basic precepts that define Christian theology!
The foundation of Christianity is the belief that Jesus sacrificed himself to pay for humanity’s sins – but it only qualifies for an individual if they acknowledge and accept this gift. No one can truly have a personal relationship with God (i.e. “know God”) unless they accept Jesus as their lord and as the only savior from God’s condemnation of their sin. Anyone who fails to do this will remain under the condemnation brought by sin, and so – despite God’s love for them and wish that they would accept Jesus as savior – they will be thrown into the lake of fire.
Yes, that includes literally all people who die as Muslims, Jews, Hindus, atheists, agnostics and everyone else who died while disbelieving that Jesus was their savior from the condemnation of sin and the ultimate representative of God on Earth.
That is Christianity, like it or not.
So if liberals – including Bernie Sanders – condemn such basic statements as Vought’s describing his faith’s viewpoint, then they are condemning Christianity. They are calling the Christian Bible itself “islamophobic”, “hateful, and “discriminatory”.
Myriad liberals will never admit this because for so many of them, their political worldview clings to a ridiculous, deep-rooted lie: that all religions merely preach the same few values – and that these values are ones that current-day western liberals hold themselves.
Now if the religious and secular liberals of the world want to develop a theological system where the harmful ideas of the Abrahamic faiths are abandoned and merely draws upon a select few strategically chosen figures and lines out of their original context (all of which they do indeed appear to be trying to do, just not described in this way), then just acknowledge that you are trying to create a new religion which is distinct from the old, dangerous ones.
Part of the reason this frustrates me is the sheer intellectual dishonesty on display. But the other reason is that when a sensible person just criticizes the religion or holy book itself as dangerously immoral, these same liberals respond to that person with the same appalled hatred they direct at the people who profess those beliefs!
In my opinion, it is long past due for liberals to educate themselves on the actual worldview and distinct theologies of the world’s major religions, and stop living in denial.
Just admit it, liberals, at least to yourselves:
You think the Abrahamic faiths are appalling, dangerous, immoral, and bigoted. Many of the core values of these religions are fundamentally at odds with your own values. You hate these religions. And you’re certainly not tolerant of them.
