I wrote this shortly after seeing a photo of a father holding his young son, looking at a memorial to his wife. Religious sentiments and language seem to often dominate the ideas and feelings people express about such events, but as atheists our outlook is sometimes different and I feel the desire to express decidedly atheistic sentiments of these events instead. This is my first. I wanted it to have the sound and feeling of an epitaph so it is brief.
For there is no god as our protection
Nor heaven beyond as compensation,
There are some who take up a warrior’s burden
Who strive alongside their warrior brethren
So others at home might live their heaven.
